Subject Guides

Many libraries, including the David Yaxley Memorial Library and the Auckland Libraries, use the Dewey Decimal Classification system to arrange their collections.  This system groups material by subject, with the number on the spine showing the category to which the item belongs.   At the David Yaxley Memorial Library these subject numbers are used for all media in the Library.

Even though the catalogue can be searched by subject terms (e.g. biography, digital art, or theology) as well as author and title, it helps to know the classification number if you wish to browse the shelves.  You can, of course, also search the catalogue using the classification number.
