Murray Thom
Murray Thom left school at 15 with no qualifications. By the age of 23 he was Managing Director of CBS Records New Zealand, the youngest Managing Director of that group in the world.
With a strong desire to be self-employed he left the corporate life to strike out on his own. Against all the odds, not to mention a couple of major New Zealand organisations, Murray won the government tender in 1987 to introduce personalised number plates in New Zealand. In 1997 he sold that company to return to his real passion - the music business.
Murray and his wife Anne were having coffee one evening at an Auckland hotel, enjoying the music being played on the other side of the lobby. Murray said to Anne, “Whoever is playing that piano I am going to record.” I introduced myself to Carl Doy and we arranged to meet the next day. Thus was born “Piano by Candlelight”
When Carl Doy and Murray first met, neither of them anticipated that the Piano by Candlelight albums would be released in over 40 countries. Other Murray Thom productions include:“Espresso Guitar” with Martin Winch,
Carl Doy album Piano by Candlelight,
Moonlight Sax by Brian Smith,
Margaret Urlich’s album of covers of New Zealand classic pop songs.
MILK (Moments of Intimacy, Laughter and Kinship). All were big sellers locally and internationally - Piano by Candlelight sold 50,000 copies in its first year.
